All Hail the Split Tailgate Master Race

Had a trailer hitch installed on the Lex Cruiser to increase its truckish capabilities. I’m a little disappointed by the fact that the hitch is rated for 1500lbs less than what the LX is rated to tow, but it still enough to pull the odd box trailer or the Alfa on a flatbed. It’s most common use, however, will be to hold my bike rack. And as you can see, thanks to the split tail gate, I can still open up the back even with the bike rack mounted.

I desperately need that plastic bit that goes between the cargo area and the tailgate. So many little things go missing there

Surprisingly enough, the BMW X5 still has a split tailgate, even while the RR Sport does not.

Split gate is best gate!

I’m trying to mimic this setup with a park tool bicycle repair stand and a tool roll for the tailgate. Would make a killer mobile bike repair station.

It’s a godsend. There’s so many thoughtful little touches on this car. The amount of built-in load straps in the back of this thing is nuts.

This was the feature I liked best about my ‘95 Yukon. The upper portion was just glass so it would easily stay up if you wanting to hang something out the back.

Yup. Although technically, that is not a true split tail gate. Lots of SUVs have that.

I’ll see your “nah”, and I’ll raise you one “yes”.

The original ones had the real deal. All the GM suvs lost it after the 2000ish redesigns.
